If you are thinking of buying a new Laptop/PC or, getting an existing one repaired/upgraded, make sure that whoever you buy from or, ask to repair/upgrade, installs genuine Windows 7 and DOESN'T use an illegal hack. Microsoft has announced the introduction of its "90-day phone home policy" for the entire life of Windows 7 meaning that, every 90 days your computer will automatically connect to Microsoft's servers and will be checked for the 'tell-tale' signs of an 'illegally' activated version of Window. Currently, there are 70 hacks for Windows 7, but using one involves subtle changes being made to the operating system and upon scrutiny, an illegally activated version is easy for Microsoft to spot.

Repeatedly validating Windows is a new move for Microsoft, but I suppose that eventually, it was inevitable that Microsoft would employ methods to curtail the activities of the pirates who cost them millions in lost revenue.

If you use one of the 70 hacks and you are caught using an illegal version of Windows 7, a message will be displayed that informs you that Microsoft are aware and 'I' assume that they will record your IP address for future reference. In addition to this, your illegal version of Windows 7 will be downgraded, you will be warned repeatedly, urged to upgrade to the genuine version of Windows 7 and there's no doubt, that the warnings will be displayed in the most annoying way possible!

Some industry analysts are crying 'invasion of privacy,' just as they did when the "Windows genuine advantage" upgrade was released by Microsoft in 2006, but 'I' think that this move (change in policy) won't bother most people. The only reliable way to make sure that you receive a genuine copy of Windows 7 is to buy your hardware with a pre-installed version or, your software pack from a 'reputable dealer.'
