No, I'm not talking about the flower display in your back garden, but if we are to believe K.R. Sridhar - the inventor of the Bloom Box, in 5-10 years time, that's where your Bloom Box will be installed. What is it? It's an electricity producing fuel-cell device.

Don't just dismiss this idea!

The sceptics amongst you will mutter - "Yes, I've heard it all before!" BUT, don't make the same mistake as I did when I first heard about it, and dismiss this as a gimmick. In the last eight years, top venture capitalists have reportedly poured $400 million into K.R. Sridhar's invention which, as long as the device can be mass-produced and sold cheap enough to put it at the top of every one's "I Wanna" list, may revolutionise the way that electricity is generated and distributed.

In fact, when I discovered the credentials of Mr. Sridhar (a NASA scientist) and found out that he invented the device that was to produce Oxygen on NASA's space trip to Mars AND that when the expedition was cancelled, he adapted the same device to produce electricity AND that Google, Ebay, Walmart, Staples and Fedex are some of the companies that have already had several Bloomboxes fitted and been successfully using them, in Google's case, for eighteen months - I was amazed. eBay claims that they have already saved £65,000 in electricity costs since 5 Bloomboxes were installed nine months ago. They even claim that the boxes generate more power than the 3,000 solar panels at its headquarters.

Bloom Box - we may all have one, but at what price?

At the moment, the half million pound price tag puts it well out of the reach of us common folk, but again, if we believe Mr. Sridhar when he tells us that it won't be long before we can buy his device for under £2,000. At this price, it is something that in 5 - 10 year's time, we may see installed in our gardens.

The American 60 minutes programme that helped introduce Mr. Sridhar's invention, includes an interview with him during which, he not only shows us one of the fuel cells and explains what they are made from and how they are made but also, includes video of the manufacturing plant and interviews with the executives from some of the companies that are already using his invention to successfully produce their own electricity literally, in their own front gardens.
