Changing screen resolution
Getting the best out of your display
Modern computers and laptops with powerful graphics adapters are capable of displaying more and more pixels per square centimeter than ever before and nowadays, it's not unusual for good graphics adapters to be able to display screen resolutions far in excess of the norm' - 1024 pixels x 768 pixels.
So, lets say that you have a picture from your digital camera and it's 2400 pixels x 1800 pixels. Display this picture on a computer or, laptop monitor that is set to 1024 pixels x 768 pixels and you will see less than a quarter of the picture on your screen. Increase the resolution of your screen, say to 1600 pixels x 1200 pixels, and you will see more of the picture on your screen in one go, without scrolling up or, down.
So, if you want the best viewing experience, when looking at pictures from your digital camera, make sure that you match the size of the picture from your camera to the screen resolution of your computer. However, before you rush to increase your screen resolution, bear in mind that doing this makes everything smaller on the screen, and this is where some people become confused.
Increasing screen resolution, decreases the overall size of the 'viewed' image so, you see more of the picture from your digital camera, but the images that are fixed to 1024 pixels x 768 pixels, like 70% of web pages on the internet, will all appear smaller on your screen. If the image is smaller, the text on most pages, becomes too small to read and that is the exact opposite of what most people want!
First, let's look at how we change the resolution of our screen. In Windows XP - click the Windows "Start" button then, "control Panel" then, "Display" and finally, "Settings." In the bottom left hand corner of the window, you will see a 'slide' control - "screen resolution." First, note what the resolution is set to now, so, if you don't like the changes, you can return it to normal. Next, click on the 'slide' control and slide it as far to the right as you can. This is the maximum resolution that your graphics adapter can display on your screen. Try increasing the screen resolution to the maximum and saving the changes by clicking "Apply" then, "OK."
Wow! shock, horror: now, some of you will barely be able to read the text in Windows. So, now you understand how to change the screen resolution, you should be able to find a setting that best suits your purposes. Now, it should be apparent that there isn't an ideal screen resolution that suits all purposes and uses. The highest possible screen resolution displays more of the picture from your camera, but text becomes very small and hard to read.
Those amongst us that spend a lot of time surfing the internet and therefore, using Internet Explorer, Firefox or, a similar browser, will be pleased to hear that there is a "Zoom" feature built into these. In Internet Explorer, click "View" then, "Zoom" and you can increase or, decrease the size of the 'displayed' screen as a percentage. This enables you to have the highest screen resolution available to you and then, to change the size of text on the fly.
