When your computer connects to the

internet, it is assigned an IP address and becomes part of a network. Data sent from your computer is identified as coming from its IP address and data going to your computer is sent to its IP address. The internet is a massive network of computers. To get from one place to another, data travels through switches and routers. Normally, computers in the same private

network can communicate with each other without any difficulty and to do so, may use any number of switches, but not necessarily routers. However, to communicate, computers located in different private networks, MUST use a router, or indeed, many routers. Different computers can have the same private IP address, but not on the same private network, but public IP addresses are all unique. If the internet is a circle made up of circles, all the different private networks (millions), containing all the different computers with private IP addresses (billions), are all located on the perimeter of the circle. The center of the circle contains the public networks or, networks with public IP addresses.

The return journey is through the same tunnel, but this time however, the final public IP address obtained before the network goes private, is located at the emergence of the tunnel and not the entrance. Therefore, because a virtual private network can span public networks or, networks with public IP addresses, you can appear to be in one place when in fact, you are in another!
