Internet addiction - are you addicted to the internet ?
Recently, I read something on an old BBC Blog which made me think about Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)
Before I tell you what the blog was about, let me quote an excerpt from a reader's comment to the main story - "This story reminds me of the people who film their children tipping objects on top of themselves or falling off of things rather than putting the camera down to help them or prevent the accident in the first place."
Now, if you are the type of person who, when watching a viewer's funny clip of their child falling off their bike on ITV's 'You've Been Framed', used to shout at the TV - "Put the camera down and help him!" and you couldn't understand how, instead of preventing his child from hurting himself, the father carried on filming - you will definitely not be able to understand the actions of one child's mother.
It's almost a year since the child's mother was on-line, 'tweeting' to her friends through her Twitter account in fact, she 'tweeted' 74 times that day - Monday 14th December 2009. Her 'tweet' at 5-22pm (Florida local time) was about the weather - what's so strange about this? Eleven minutes later her son telephoned 911 to report that his 2 year old brother was floating unconscious in the pool. Five hours later, her son, was declared dead - shocking, I know.
As I sat and watched TV the other day, I saw a new advertisement from 'Kelloggs' - I thought that they could never 'top' the 'Crunchy Nut Breaks' ad' which 'I think' is very clever - the one in the supermarket where, the staff stop customers from buying the product as they shake the box and say, "you can't buy this one because they are broken." They then take the cereal in the back of the shop to eat themselves.
The new advertisement pictures a child arriving home from school and have 'Coco Pops' for tea. Are the mothers out there really too busy to have time to cook a wholesome meal for their children's tea? They must be - why else would Kelloggs be advertising in such a way? What are the mothers doing with their time? Probably too busy on Facebook, Twitter, Farmville or, some other social networking site.
Are you spending too much time on the internet? Are you addicted? Are you worried about a family member who is spending too much time glued to their computer screen? Does your partner spend more time with their on-line friends/community than they do with you?
Internet addiction is the same as any type of addiction and at the suggestion, a true internet addict will vehemently deny the possibility. Thankfully, there is a media that we can turn to to help us to spot the tell-tale signs of addiction and diagnose whether we are or, not. Now, I know that it's ironic, but to get help, anyone that is interested or, worried, will have to go on to the internet to get more information.
