Internet Addiction Disorder - IAD

Do you use the internet more than you feel you should do ?

Is there such a thing as internet addiction ?

Can someone really be addicted to the internet ? I doubt that they can, but I can understand how someone may over-use their computer and the internet to satisfy an addiction and I can also understand how someone may become addicted to something because it is made easily and freely available on the internet. I can also understand how someone may use a certain, game, application or, web site on the internet to satisfy or, gratify themselves.

Can you really be addicted to the internet ?

In my opinion, internet addiction is not a disorder in itself, it is more of a classification that covers many different types of addcition that can be satisfied using the internet. In the same way that you wouldn't describe someone that is addicted to smoking or, nicotine as, being addicted to going to the newsagents to buy cigarettes, you can't describe someone that is addicted to sex or, pornography, as being addicted to the internet.

Internet addiction - Facebook, Twitter, Farmville etc.

In the same way that we may become engrossed in a certain television program or, series of programmes, it is also possible to become engrossed in a web site or, application that runs on the internet. Problem is, whereas a TV programme or, series eventually finishes and we have to wait for the next episode, the internet is available 24/7

Internet addiction - are you addicted to the internet ?

Internet addiction

Recently, I read something on an old BBC Blog which made me think about Internet Addiction Disorder (IAD)
Before I tell you what the blog was about, let me quote an excerpt from a reader's comment to the main story - "This story reminds me of the people who film their children tipping objects on top of themselves or falling off of things rather than putting the camera down to help them or prevent the accident in the first place."
Now, if you are the type of person who, when watching a viewer's funny clip of their child falling off their bike on ITV's 'You've Been Framed', used to shout at the TV - "Put the camera down and help him!" and you couldn't understand how, instead of preventing his child from hurting himself, the father carried on filming - you will definitely not be able to understand the actions of one child's mother.
It's almost a year since the child's mother was on-line, 'tweeting' to her friends through her Twitter account in fact, she 'tweeted' 74 times that day - Monday 14th December 2009. Her 'tweet' at 5-22pm (Florida local time) was about the weather - what's so strange about this? Eleven minutes later her son telephoned 911 to report that his 2 year old brother was floating unconscious in the pool. Five hours later, her son, was declared dead - shocking, I know.
As I sat and watched TV the other day, I saw a new advertisement from 'Kelloggs' - I thought that they could never 'top' the 'Crunchy Nut Breaks' ad' which 'I think' is very clever - the one in the supermarket where, the staff stop customers from buying the product as they shake the box and say, "you can't buy this one because they are broken." They then take the cereal in the back of the shop to eat themselves.
The new advertisement pictures a child arriving home from school and have 'Coco Pops' for tea. Are the mothers out there really too busy to have time to cook a wholesome meal for their children's tea? They must be - why else would Kelloggs be advertising in such a way? What are the mothers doing with their time? Probably too busy on Facebook, Twitter, Farmville or, some other social networking site.
Are you spending too much time on the internet? Are you addicted? Are you worried about a family member who is spending too much time glued to their computer screen? Does your partner spend more time with their on-line friends/community than they do with you?
Internet addiction is the same as any type of addiction and at the suggestion, a true internet addict will vehemently deny the possibility. Thankfully, there is a media that we can turn to to help us to spot the tell-tale signs of addiction and diagnose whether we are or, not. Now, I know that it's ironic, but to get help, anyone that is interested or, worried, will have to go on to the internet to get more information.
www.netaddiction.com tells us that there is a growing epidemic of IAD and sets out the symptoms. Apparently, if we suffer from five or, more of them, we maybe suffering from internet addiction. The website offers access to several different recovery
resources and treatment services for users suffering addiction to: Cybersex/Cyberporn, on-line affairs, on-line gambling, on-line gaming, compulsive surfing and e-bay. Anyone that is worried can visit the website and take one or, more of the on-line tests and quizes to see whether there may be a problem. Visit the site and click the "Self Tests" link in the left hand menu.

Internet addiction - a form of escapism

Following a certain TV programme like a soap or, game show or, watching a movie, is a form of escapism - whilst we are watching them, we forget about the troubles and woes of our daily life. The same can be said about certain web sites and applications. Problem is, when the TV program finishes, we can switch the TV off - the internet is available 24/7

Internet addiction

Whereas in the past, a gambler had to travel to the betting shop or, casino and the compulsive shopper had to travel to the town centre to satisfy their addiction and limited availabilty was enough to deter most potential addicts, the internet brings the vice, not to our front door, it brings it right into our homes. Now, the vices are more accessible than ever before and we are being introduced to them from a very early age. Future problem ?
