How to make CDs from your old LPs

LP to CD conversion - travel back in time!

With scientists everywhere contemplating whether time travel is possible, I can announce that it is! This week, I successfully built a time machine, tested it and can confirm that last night, I was whisked back in time, not once, but several times.

Apart from experiencing an overwhelming urge to announce this to the world, I have also had to consider whether I should keep such an important discovery secret or, whether I should publish how I achieved this phenomena - you will be pleased to hear that not only, have I decided to make my findings public, but also, that you too, can easily build your own time machine and here's what you need to do it.

Vinyl records to CD - the equipment

Your old LPs (remember those), a lead with two RCA jacks (red and white), an RCA to 3.5mm adapter (available here), your computer and (here's where some of you may struggle) an old turntable. In conjunction with an aptly named and rather snazzy piece of software called "spin it again", I used the aforementioned bits and pieces to convert my old record collection into brand new shiny CDs and what's more, in the process, I got rid of all that hissing, crackling and popping.

Yes, it's easy to leach free music from the internet, but there's nothing quite like having your old (paid for) record collection, playable on the latest, fan dangled music equipment and backed up into the bargain.

Authentic sound on modern media

I left the Christmas LPs til last and on some, I even left in the hissing, crackling and popping because it made them sound more authentic. Cynics may declare this "a load of old tosh," but it is a well known fact that hearing an old song is one of the easiest ways to trigger a memorable occasion, throw in a little imagination and you're back in your old, favourite cafe, disco or, at a live concert or, on a fairground - the memories just come flooding back.

Free LP to CD software

Spin it again is an LP to CD conversion program which is easy-to-learn and has built-in step-by-step instructions. You can get a free trial that allows you to do three LPs, but if you want to do more, you have to buy a license key from the authors of the program. Those of you who haven't got a turntable, the expertise or, more than three LPs (but not sufficient quantity to justify purchasing a licence key) will be pleased to hear that we will convert your old LPs for you.
