North Cyprus broadband - bandwidth management

Broadband internet connections are managed using bandwidth management controls which enable the internet service providers to share their bandwidth fairly amongst their users. This is known as guaranteeing a quality of service. There are many different types of bandwidth management systems available. Some are cheap to buy and offer only basic control, others are quite expensive and offer very sophisticated controls.

On a simple system, if user 1 and user 2 (of 16) both want to download their emails at the same time, a bandwidth management control kicks in and shares the available bandwidth between them and, if user 3 (of 16) accesses the internet whilst they are both downloading their emails, the same bandwidth management control kicks in again and shares the available bandwidth between all three users. Obviously, when the bandwidth is shared three ways, it means that each user gets less so, on a 512kbps internet connection with three concurrent users (shared three ways), each user gets about 170kbps. This control also stops user 1 (of 16) getting all his bandwidth allocation at the expense of users 2 and 3 (of 16), but what happens when there are 10 concurrent users?

The high cost of internet bandwidth, good equipment and availability of infrastructure force some of the internet service providers in Northern Cyprus to set their contention ratios too high, but sharing their bandwidth allocation between too many users results in there regularly being too many concurrent users on their system. This not only, reduces the amount of bandwidth available to each user, but also, adversely affects the overall performance of their system.

Some internet service providers in Northern Cyprus, simply can't afford to buy the best (most expensive) equipment that allows them to set sophisticated bandwidth management controls and find it difficult to share bandwidth fairly. Cheaper equipment may only give them the ability to configure a single setting for all users which again, adversely affects user's bandwidth allocation. With too little control, it's too easy for "bandwidth hogs" to use up all the bandwidth, leaving some users with very little.

Some internet service providers systems in Northern Cyprus are just poorly managed and as a result, users experience wild fluctuations in the amount of bandwidth available to them and constant downtime as the system repeatedly crashes and reboots when it can't cope.

The more bandwidth that a service provider buys, the cheaper it becomes per Mbps. The larger providers with thousands of users are buying (and have the infrastructure to deliver) hundreds of Mbps, but there are quite a few small internet service providers in Northern Cyprus who can't afford to buy in the same quantity and their resources are spread much thinner.

Sharing is a concept that most users cannot, do not or, will not accept, but there is a concept that most do not have a problem understanding - greed!

Various user activities mean that internet service providers (worldwide) are engaged in a constant battle against the users on their systems who want more than their fair share of bandwidth. The first line of defence in the armoury of the internet service provider is their policy of fair usage - every internet service provider has one. Users who persistently download data (music, tv programmes and films) will almost certainly breach their internet service providers policy of fair usage and when they do so, will discover that their internet service provider has introduced controls to limit their usage. There are various techniques that internet service providers employ to bandwidth control (limit) users who breach their fair usage policies.

North Cyprus broadband - burst speed

Your internet service provider may configure your internet connection with a burst speed and a time limit (usually, just a few seconds) which is allocated at the beginning of each request. This enables web pages to load quickly, but as soon as a constant stream of bandwidth is required beyond the time limit, the bandwidth allocation automatically reduces. The burst speed setting allows internet service providers to quote higher speeds for their connections.

North Cyprus broadband - fall back control

Your internet service provider may configure your internet connection with a maximum allowable throughput in MB and when that limit is reached, the bandwidth allocation automatically reduces or, may stop altogether.

North Cyprus broadband - deep packet inspection

If your internet service provider has equipment that is capable of real time deep packet inspection, they may configure your internet connection so that when certain file types are downloaded (music, film and video), the bandwidth allocation automatically reduces.

North Cyprus broadband - limiting by port or IP address

Your internet service provider may configure your internet connection so that all traffic passing through certain ports or, from certain IP addresses is limited.

North Cyprus broadband - limiting by protocol

Your internet service provider may configure your internet connection so that certain types of traffic are limited or, are prioritised according to their protocol, for example: http traffic (usually web pages) may receive priority over other types of traffic, ensuring that web pages receive priority and load quickly.
