In my weekly 'Tic Top Tip' (formerly 'Ticproblemsolver') column in the Cyprus Today newspaper, I offer impartial advice on all aspects of computers and the internet and I hope to do the same here, but it would be quite wrong of me to do so without first, declaring an interest in the marketplace so, here it is.....

Buying a new computer is not about 'cheap' it's about 'quality components at a reasonable price and good customer service' because when something goes wrong and you need some help, here's what you want to avoid:-

OK so, you buy your computer from the local computer shop, pick it up, take it home and connect everything up yourself. Compared to the price that I may charge, you make a saving of 100TL or, even 200TL, but before you do, ask yourself.....
|
• When you have a problem, can you pick up the telephone and explain or, is there a language barrier? • Will you have to disconnect the computer, jump in the car, drive down to the shop and connect it up and try to explain? • Will you have to leave it with them whilst they look at it or, fix it then, drive back to the shop, pick it up and re-connect everything when you get home?
• When you have a problem and try to explain it to them, will you discover that the guy that spoke perfect English when he sold you the computer, suddenly doesn't understand! • When you get the computer home and switch it on, will you discover that the operating system has been set up and the software has been installed in Turkish? • Will you enjoy re-installing and configuring all the programs that you need (Skype, MSN, AVG, Office, Outlook, Windows Mail etc?) • Will the messages that constantly pop up on your screen annoy you? - "This version of Windows is not genuine!" • Will your internet connection work on the new computer and if it doesn't, do you know how to make it work?
• Have all the correct drivers been installed for all the components in the computer or, will you find that your Skype telephone doesn't work, that there is no sound or, your screen resolution is not what it used to be? • Will your printer work with the new computer?
• Do you know and trust the shop or, workers in the shop? • Can you leave your old PC or, hard disk drive containing all your private information and ask them to copy the data to your new computer or, install it as a slave drive in your new computer?

The price of computer components in Northern Cyprus are now comparable to those in the rest of Europe and the benefits of purchasing locally are obvious, as are the pitfalls of purchasing elsewhere.

What would you rather hear? • I use the cheapest Chinese computer bits that I can find and a whole bunch of illegal software! • I don't have a registered business or, company, in fact, I build computers for a bit of beer money on the side, but I do advertise my services in the classified section of the local newspaper. • I give a guarantee and will honour it (for as long as I am here, but only if the guy that I buy my bits off hasn't gone bust and agrees to replace any faulty parts.).....that's why my computers are the cheapest and why you should buy from me!
Or, would you rather hear? • I buy from a local importer, who gives me a guarantee. I have dealt with them for 5 years and on numerous occasions, they have swapped faulty parts for me. They sell good components to me at a reasonable price. • I make the computers myself and install a proper operating system, software and drivers (in English) and set up all the utilities that you use (Skype, MSN, AVG, Office etc.) • I will deliver and install your new system and make sure that everything is working as it should be. • I am available seven days a week on any one of three telephone numbers. • I have been doing this (legally) in Northern Cyprus for five years and have a proven track record of supplying a high level of customer service.....that's why mine is the best computer deal in North Cyprus and why you should buy from me!

A recent report suggests that, in the UK alone, on-line credit card fraud has topped the £500 million mark in the last year. This is double the amount of the expected figure and, with us all being told to go to our banks and not to the police to report fraud, it is a very worrying situation for all of us.
