With satellite TV service providers moving towards more secure methods of data encryption that are virtually impossible to 'crack' and systems that include security measures that are much easier to re-configure (should they be 'cracked') - customers of 'pirated' TV will soon discover that blank TV screens and service disruption are the norm. It seems that the writing is on the wall for the TV 'pirates' who, upon implementation of the new data encryption technique, will find it increasingly difficult to supply and maintain a watchable/value for money service.

Orbit Showtime, one of the Middle East's main satellite TV providers, is a company whose programming is stolen by the TV 'pirates', but they move to a new encryption technique in February 2010 and upon full implementation of the new system, 'only' bona-fida customers will be able to receive programming. The satellite TV companies are losing millions of £'s to the 'pirates' and so, it's hardly surprising that they are introducing a solution to stop their activities.

Lately, customers of the TV 'pirates' have had too many 'picture freezing' problems and service disruptions to be completely satisfied with the service that they receive and many will also be concerned about the advance payment that they have made for a year's service and worry whether they are going to receive uninterrupted service for the period of their agreement.

Add to this, the fact that, many of the TV 'pirates' customers feel uneasy about accepting a 'dubious' service and admit that they only do so, because there is no alternative and I suppose that it's inevitable soon, that customers of the 'pirates' will be jumping ship, especially when they discover that there is a life raft floating nearby - let me explain!

Although Sky TV is not allowed to accept customers who reside outside the UK (where the service is intended for), it is another satellite TV service that is being watched by many people in countries other than the UK. There is a distinct difference however, between this and receiving 'pirated' TV in that, the customers are legitimate account holders with Sky, they pay them directly for the service and they receive the signal by legitimate means, allbeit, outside the UK. The only problem is that to receive Sky's full service in Northern Cyprus, you have to give up half your garden to a 4.2 metre satellite dish which is not everyone's cup of tea!

Whilst non-UK resident Sky customers fail legal scrutiny on a technicality, they cannot be tarred with the same brush as the customers who are receiving the service being supplied by the TV 'pirates' who are not authorised to unscramble the satellite TV signal and who will use 'any' method of delivery, including but not restricted to, unscrambling the signal by transmitting data over the internet.

Many of the customers who are receiving 'pirated' TV will be shocked and surprised to hear, that in the same way that customers of Sky TV receive a legitimate service and programming allbeit outside the UK, they too, can receive a legitimate service and programming. In fact, they can receive exactly the same service and programming that they get from the TV 'pirates', but by legitimate means and they can do so, with a clear conscience, with no freezing and scrambling and 'without' an internet connection.

Stealing the decode signal
|
If your satellite TV supplier installed one of these cheap (£38) Chinese satellite decoders, he is supplying you with stolen TV. This box enables him to merge the scrambled television signal from a satellite dish with the illegal unscrambling signal which he sends to your home over the internet.
What your supplier doesn't tell you is that the route that the illegal decoding signal travels along to your home (over the internet) can easily be traced through to your ISP's IP address or, even worse, to YOUR IP address and

that, at the moment, the TV companies are very busy, actively tracing these IP addresses so that, under a new trade agreement between the US, the EU, Australia, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Switzerland, they can issue take-down notices to your internet service provider - effectively, banning you from the internet. IF your ISP doesn't comply, they can make an application to the international body responsible for issuing public IP addresses and have ALL the ISPs IP addresses taken down!...continues further down |
North Cyprus satellite TV - costs that the TV 'Pirates' don't have to bear

The official satellite TV companies spend a considerable amount of money on their customer's behalf (up to 25% of the retail price of their TV packages) in producing their web site, programme schedule and marketing material.
For a moment, imagine that you were asked to enter the following information into a database:-
Showseries, Thursday 08.00, Coronation Street, Deidre and Ken get divorced
Now imagine that you had to make (up to) 40 different similar entries for one day's schedule then, multiply that by 31 (days in the month) then, multiply that by 75 (the amount of channels) then multiply that by 3 (the amount of languages) then, multiply that by 2 (the amount of formats, web site and printed) then, multiply that by 12 (months in a year - approximately 6,480,000 database entries, which is not the work of one, two or even, three people, but the work of an army of people in air-conditioned offices.
Obviously, the TV 'Pirates' don't have to bear these costs and simply direct their customers to the official web sites of the licensed TV provider in order to obtain their programming schedule. For example, TV 'Pirates' stealing the decode signal from Orbit Showtime would direct their customers to the Orbit Showtime website to get their TV guide, BUT consider this: imagine that next time you visited their web site, you were presented with the following information:-
When your satellite TV provider installed your TV system, if he supplied you with a Dreambox and your IP address appears in the list of IP addresses below, you are receiving stolen TV and your IP address has been logged.
