Organising the layout of files and folders in Windows
Your files and folders preferences
Everyone has their own favourite layout for their folders and files. When navigating around Windows, you may like to see your folders organised as thumbnails (large), tiled (medium), icons (smaller) or, in a list (smallest) - with or, without details. You may prefer to have your folders and files grouped alphabetically by name, by type or, by size and displaying several other available options.
Experienced users who regularly plug in a USB memory stick or, detachable hard disk drive, will know how annoying it is, when every time you navigate to a new folder, you discover that the folder and file layout has changed, forcing you each time, to select the 'view' menu and change the options. You can check out the different display options that are available by clicking the Windows 'Start' button then, 'My Computer' before selecting the 'View' menu at the top.

Sorting out your files and folders- A quick how-to!
Try clicking on each of the layout options - 'Thumbnails' etc. and see which one suits you best. Now, hold your mouse over 'Arrange icons by' and run through the different options that are available to you there. You can quickly arrange and sort your files and folders in a way that you prefer, but what most of us do at this point, is navigate to where we want to be, open a folder or, file, do what we want to do and then, close down any open windows. Guess what, do this, and next time you plug in your USB device, you will have to go through the whole 'view' and 'sort' process again!
Don't forget to save the settings!
If you want to keep your 'view' and 'sort' options, here's what you should do - arrange and sort your folders and files in the normal way, but when you have finished, click on 'Tools' (in the menu at the top) then, click on 'Folder options' before selecting the 'View' tab (at the top) and clicking the button 'Apply to all folders' - Hey presto! Even the folders and files on your USB device are arranged and sorted in the way that you want them to be - forever. 'Advanced settings' can also be applied in this final window. Why not take a look through and see if you would like to apply any of them to your folders and files before you 'Apply' and save the changes.
