Save time using RSS feeds
|
|
If like me, you are interested in anything to do with computer software/hardware, the internet and technological advances in related products and services, you will know that keeping up with the latest technological advances and developments is hard work and involves trawling through many web sites to find out what's new. It's not something that you look forward to doing repeatedly and can sometimes be very boring and time consuming.

Finding the right RSS feeds for you will save you time and effort in the future

Anyone with a 'special interest' in a particular field will know what I mean, but if you are unsure, next time you sit down at your computer, count how many different web sites you visit and then ask yourself whether it would be handy to have all that information presented to you in one place.
This is the basic idea behind an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed. Web site authors place the latest updates/additions to their web sites in their RSS feed and invite their readers to automatically receive the updates by subscribing to the feed.
To do this, subscribers need an RSS aggregator (reader) which is a program that automatically retrieves your chosen RSS feeds and presents them to you. There are many different RSS aggregators available and your favourite, will be determined by the way in which you would like to receive your RSS feeds.
An RSS feed can be displayed using a browser, such as Internet Explorer or, Firefox - a popular example is iGoogle or, by using a 'standalone' program such as "feeddemon" (feeddemon.com) which displays your 'feeds' on your computer desktop or, by using software like "NewsGator" (newsgator.com) which will deliver your 'feeds' straight into the "inbox" of Microsoft Outlook.
An RSS feed usually comprises: a headline or title with a brief description and a link to the page containing the article. There are several examples at the foot of this page under the heading "Popular Topic Tags"
