How to speed up Windows Vista
Last week we looked at how you can speed up Windows Vista with a USB memory stick. Here are some more ways to speed up Windows Vista.
Disable Vista search indexing: click the Windows "Start" button then, "Computer" before right clicking "C: Drive" - select "properties" and under the "General" tab, uncheck "Index this drive for faster searching" before selecting "Apply changes to drive C:\, subfolders and files."
If you don't need or, use a program, uninstall it: click the Windows "Start" button before opening "Control Panel" (make sure that you are in "Classic View") - select "Programs and Features" where you can select and uninstall unwanted programs.
Turn off remote differential compression: click the Windows "Start" button before opening "Control Panel" (make sure that you are in "classic view") - select "Programs and Features" before selecting "Turn Windows features on or, off." Scroll down and uncheck "Remote Differential Compression."
Check which programs are loading automatically on start up and stop any that you don't need by disabling them: click the Windows "Start" button then, where it says "Start Search" type 'msconfig' before selecting "OK" and pressing the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Select the "Startup" tab and uncheck any programs that you don't need to load when you switch on. Follow the instructions to restart your computer.
Turn off Automatic Disk Defragmentation: click the Windows "Start" button then, "Computer" before right clicking "C: Drive. Click on "Properties" before selecting the "tools tab." Click on "Defragment Now" and uncheck "Run on a schedule." Once you have turned off this feature, don't forget to regularly defragment your hard disk drive manually. This keeps your file system in order and helps your hard disk drive to run at its best.
If you would rather have Windows Vista running faster (as opposed to looking prettier) - you can adjust the settings for "best performance" instead of "best appearance" - click the Windows "Start" button before opening "Control Panel" (make sure that you are in "classic view") - select "System" and "Advanced system settings" before selecting the "Advanced" tab and then, "Settings" (under the "Performance" heading) - select "adjust for best performance."
At any one time, there are over a hundred services running in the background on a Vista machine. Some of these can't be shutdown, but some can: click the Windows "Start" button before opening "Control Panel" and selecting "administrative tools. Choose "system configuration" before clicking the "services" tab. As an example, you can safely uncheck: "offline Files" (unless you’re using Offline File Sync), "tablet PC Input Service" (unless you have a tablet PC), "terminal services", "Windows Search" (if you have already disabled Vista search indexing) and "fax" (unless you’re using a fax modem.) Do a Google search to read up on each of the services and work out which ones you can stop.

The telephone is fantastic, after struggling with Skype and paying silly prices for the mobile phone for a year we are more than happy to recommend the system.

The reception is as good as a land line and we do not have to leave the computer on. Having the extension phone in the kitchen means we can hear the phone anywhere in the house, great! Brian Hare (TRNC)
