Wireless network problem

This week's free software recommendation will be of interest to anyone who is using a wireless router or, network in their home or, business, who is worried about the security of their device or, network or, and who is interested in making sure that no-one is gaining unauthorised access to their internet connection.
If you are running a wireless router and you have properly configured it to use either WPA or, WPA2 security, you needn't unduly worry because, although the technology to crack both of these encryption techniques is available, the amount of time that it takes to do it, usually means that an attack would have to come from a particularly motivated individual, in other words, most 'normal' people needn't worry.
The problem is however, a lot of people who are using a wireless router in their network may not have properly set it up to use an encryption technique or, they may have done, but do not realise that a power surge or, power outage, may have returned its setting back to factory defaults which don't usually include an encryption technique.
This could mean that your wireless router is an 'open' door to the internet for anyone with a device within the range of its signal and should someone use your wireless router to connect to the internet and use your IP address to do something that they shouldn't, that you could get the blame.
"Wireless Network Watcher" is a small utility program that runs under Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003/2008, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. It scans your wireless network and displays a list of all the computers and devices that are currently connected to your network.
Everyone knows how many computers should be connected to their wireless network at any one time. The problem is that most of us don't bother to regularly check whether the list of connected devices contains 'only' those computers that are authorised to use your network.
How many readers regularly log into their wireless router and check their log file ? Not many ! How many readers have never logged into their wireless router ? Too many !
This small, free utility can be installed on your desktop and is easily started at any time. Once started, the utility can be minimised to sit on your task bar and can be configured to constantly monitor your network.
The software displays the IP address, the device name, the MAC address and several other pieces of information about any devices that are connected to your wireless network.

Unfortunately, What this piece of software will not do is give you the ability to restrict the usage of your wireless router or, your internet connection. To do that, you must use the functions included within the operating system of your wireless router. Various techniques can be used, including the two encryption techniques that I have already mentioned, but many wireless routers, also, allow you to restrict access to specific computers using several other techniques such as MAC address authentication.
The problem is that a novice user who doesn't know how to make sure that their wireless router and internet connection is properly secure has no way of knowing whether their wireless network is being used by anyone else within range. What this piece of software does for those people is it provides a way for them to manually check how many computers are connected to their wireless router who may be using their internet connection. It gives them a way to check if they have got a problem or, not, and if they have, presumably, they will want to sort it out and if need be, can contact and call in someone who can properly configure their wireless network to stop unauthorised access.
